Keep Bags Off the Ground, on a Properly Sized Pallet

Bags should sit on pallets rather than directly on a warehouse floor, since direct floor contact exposes the base fabric to ground moisture and makes handling less safe. The pallet itself needs to be sized correctly — wider than the bag’s base footprint — because an undersized pallet lets the bag overhang the edges, creating a snag risk during forklift movement and uneven weight distribution across the pallet’s support structure.

Stacking Height and Method

A common safe-stacking guideline keeps filled bag height at or below twice the base width — a 2:1 ratio — unless your specific bag’s construction has been approved by your supplier for a different configuration. Beyond that ratio, stacks become progressively less stable and place more stress on lower bags’ seams than they were necessarily tested to handle under sustained load. Pyramid or supported stacking, where each bag above the first layer rests across four bags below rather than stacking straight on top of a single bag, distributes weight more evenly and produces a meaningfully more stable stack than simple vertical stacking. If Bags Must Go Outside: Covers, Slip Sheets and Drainage

Outdoor storage is a temporary exception rather than a plan, but sites run out of covered space and the question is practical. Three things decide whether a few weeks outside costs you anything.

None of this changes the time limit. Even fully covered, treat outdoor storage in weeks rather than months, and inspect loops and fabric before lifting anything that has been outside for a while.

Moisture Control During Storage

For moisture-sensitive products, storage conditions matter as much as the bag’s own coating and liner spec — a well-protected bag stored in a genuinely damp environment, directly on wet ground, or exposed to standing water will eventually see moisture find a way in regardless of how well it was specified. Treat storage environment and bag construction as a combined system, not two independent safeguards where one fully compensates for shortfalls in the other.

First-In-First-Out Rotation and Traceability

Following FIFO rotation — using older stock before newer stock — limits how long any single batch sits in extended storage, which reduces cumulative exposure risk (UV, moisture, general handling wear) on your oldest inventory.
